Annotation

This article drafts the linguistic history of Philippine nation-building via the politics of ‘p’ and ‘f’, which demonstrate that the national language is a success story of the Tagalog (later Pilipino and Filipino) language over the vernacular languages. Filipinos have opposed colonial rule for centuries, but directive visions of a collective national(ist) battle and identity have also subjected the country to its internal conflicts on power and control.
