This article abridges the aspects of Halliday’s approach that are most apposite to cognitive linguists, and demonstrates how crucial facets of grammatical metaphor are linked to the inquiry of lexical and conceptual metaphors. Drawing from an example of scientific writing examined by Halliday (1998) as well as from discourse examples formerly submitted to conceptual metaphor analysis, this article evidences how the two approaches might fruitfully be joined to produce novel insights in naturally occurring discourse research.
