Annotation

This conversation analytic study explores the Chinese use of nage (literally “that”) to handle sore, inconvenient, or sensitive matters in radio phone-in medical consultations on sex-linked problems. The caller thus dissociates him- or herself from sex-linked issues which are normatively shun in conversations, and depicts him- or herself as a victim rather than an agent of the sex-linked worries.
