This paper debates Death Row Statements from the viewpoint of ludic language within the context of ritual. Drawing from Cook’s taxonomy of Language Play characteristics, it discusses the impact of the ludic nature of state execution on the formal, semantic and pragmatic nature of the language of Death Row Statements, which are argued to render a discourse of play with regard to both the last statements' language and the nature of the event.
