Annotation

English teaching in the (pen)ultimate year of Dutch primary schools has become compulsory in 1986 (Thijs et al. 2011). Schools may initiate foreign language instruction from age 4 onwards, for example in an early ‘English as a foreign language’ (EFL) programme. The most patent differences cover language input duration and teacher language proficiency. In both cases, English is used as medium of instruction.
