Annotation
Via their heteroglossic repertoires (viz. Hexagonal standard French, vernacular French, mesolectal African French, stylized English pieces and Maghrebi Arabic) French stand-up comics of North and sub-Saharan African origins defy, leastwise symbolically, France's centralized, monoglot linguistic ideology and create a new urban identity, including and exceeding racial and ethnic categories. This identity though is negotiated via and accepted by the nonratified audience with inconsistency.
