Annotation
This paper explores a public German debate on the interplay between standard language ideologies and social polarities, focusing on whether Kiezdeutsch, a novel speech style in multilingual urban quarters, is a licit German dialect. An underlying narrative on language and identity offers a frame to other Kiezdeutsch and its speakers, and to sketch social and sometimes racist linguistic limits.
