Annotation
Using Martineau’s (1972) model on humor's social functions, Tajfel and Turner’s (2004 [1986]) (SIT) Social Identity Theory and Turner et al.’s (1987) Self Categorization Theory, the extant literature on functions and results of sexist humor is debated. The focus lies on sex as an intergroup context and on the way sexist humor operates to raise male in-group unity, serves as kind of sexual intimidation, and reinforces self-reported rape tilt and victim reproach.
