Annotation

This study examines (im)politeness and gender in a particular online advice-giving practice of young Ghanaians, as exemplified by studied problem messages and replies on the Facebook fan page of Mama Zimbi, a Ghanaian radio and TV personality. The focus lies on advice (and other discursive moves') content, directness, and address terms. Both sexes prefer quite direct advice(imperatives), which can be equated to (im)politeness, depending on a combi of content, further discursive moves and extra elements like politeness markers. No obvious gender differences are uncovered.
