Annotation
This paper provides an up-to-date portrait of impoliteness research (IR) and points out a few future research lines. It critically reviews some theoretical and methodological problems (impoliteness vs. rudeness; impoliteness strategies; intention; and sanctioned face-threat), as well as the chief topics of inquiry (like arguments; sarcasm; disagreement; insults, taboo words), and discourse fields in which impoliteness may be found. The paper also draws attention to selected key concepts of impoliteness, though not yet widely acknowledged as such in IR. These cover: slurs; pejoratives; and some phenomena fostered by computer mediated communication (e.g., flaming or trolling).
