This paper critically evaluates selected cognitive linguistic and existing relevance-theoretic accounts of metonymy, which fall some way short. Therefore, a wholly inferential relevance-theoretic model is elaborated, according to which metonymy is a matter of labelling the intended referent via a concept literally indicated by the metonymic expression.
