Drawing on data from classic Hungarian film comedies, it is argued that humor's place within the Gricean–Leechian model needs to be expanded towards social psychological pragmatics to explain a broader humorous scope. Two planes and five types of maxim breaking are distinguished, and the Self-interest Principle (SiP) is proposed, covering politeness and self-presentational phenomena.
