This study compares the manipulative processes used in two pre-electoral debates applying to two different traditions – the 2011 Rajoy–Rubalcaba debate and the first 2008 Obama–McCain debate. There are similitudes as to e.g. positive self- and negative other-presentation and differences linked to e.g. chosen discourse strategies, moderator role, and physical position in the showdown.
