L. sketches a conversational rhetoric, the aim of which is to reconstruct the system of principles by means of which language is matched to the communicative functions we perform in using language. He investigates in how far pragmatics can be defined as the domain of principles (similar to regulative rules) rather than of real rules (constitutive rules). The problem of politeness is touched upon.
