Annotation

This paper tries to expand grasp of non-linguists’ linguistic diversity perceptions via the inquiry of how precisely and consistently UK-born students, living in north-east England, can recognize the speaker provenance of six forms of L1 and L2 English. At first, one appears inclined to distinguish the speech as either native or non-native, before trying more detailed classifications. The outcome also indicates the recognition of speaker provenance at various awareness degress, above and below the individual consciousness level.
