In this single case study, an individual from a medium-sized town in Central Java does not just acquire ‘English’; along with this novel language, he learns new thought patterns. He learns about the locally situated social and political character of multiplex English, Indonesian and Javanese registers, and he examines how and when to use an intricate and increscent range of communicative resources to accomplish communicative goals and a nice self-image.
