This study shows that parental education better portends childrens' English L3 proficiency and L3 school performance than L2 exposure within the residential community. This is illustrated by data from Italian L1 students (aged 14) with German as L2 and English as L3, attending school in the multilingual South Tyrol region of Italy, in 2005/2006.
