This paper explores the (inter)cultural nature of the communicative dimension of urban development, discussing the features, difficulties, and potentials of the global branding practice of Hangzhou, a famous tourist and ancient capital city on China's east coast. Critizing trends in apposite communication approaches, the paper sketches a holistic, cultural notion of urban branding of the developing world – as a culturally replete, development-aligned, workplace discourse.
