Annotation

After revising classic access to the study of immigrant adjustment, this paper advances a theory of differential adaptation, which indicates that migrants may adjust in several ways that do not require that they accept broader coercion to assimilate or fit in the wider society they have joined; they may also alter the extant culture and society into which they move. Their “differential” experiences need a more intricate theoretical framework to explore the relations between immigration, communication, culture, agency and power.
