Annotation

This study explores selected South African schools’ and universities’ Latin mottoes and provides some background to why these slogans -mostly exhortations- have been borrowed. It examines whether they are of any pertinence to students in present South Africa, or whether they have as yet eluded changes in the modern South African linguistic landscape.
