How do politicians deal with and propose to help their voters ? This question is handled by examining a corpus of 80 interactions recorded at the office of a Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK, which contains telephone calls between voters and the MP’s clerical ‘caseworkers’ and face-to-face meetings with MPs in their fortnightly ‘consullting’. The paper adds to knowledge on making offers in institutional environs, and elucidates the operation of the constituency office: the location of alliance between common public members and their chosen representatives.
