Annotation

Participants in a Nepalese Facebook group build and render language ideologies that both defy and impose similarity and uniformity. Monolingual ideologies are processed via the iconization of Nepali as national language and English as language of technology and the worldwide linguistic marketplace. This further deletes the discourses bolstering the revival and employment of minority languages in Facebook and other spaces. The study suggests that the ideological struggle in Facebook language policing renders public debate on politics, ethnicity, and nationalism in the offline Nepali context.
