Annotation
This paper asserts that some of Wilson and Sperber's criticisms on Grice’s irony approach are not well-grounded, whilst others can be dealt with by a (neo)Gricean approach, and observes certain invalidities in their echoic account. Lastly, it presents the Asif-Theory, based on Critical Pragmatics and Gricean in spirit, for clarifying irony from a pragmatic viewpoint, extending (and improving) Grice’s irony ideas, but also adjusting potent features of the echoic explanation.
