Annotation

This study shows that dialect variation (here: General American English [GAE] and Southern American English [SAE]) can affect listeners' speech intelligibility in a multitalker setting. The ostensible asymmetry in accent intelligibility may be partly linked to dialect-specified prosodic and phonetic characteristics. Comprehensibility of either target lowered as the amount of interfering babble noise grew.
