This paper explains the Typological Primacy Model (TPM; Rothman, 2013) for the prime phases of adult third language (L3) morphosyntactic transfer. The TPM asserts that structural proximity between the L3 and the L1 and/or L2 defines L3 transfer. L3 transfer might apply otherwise according to bilingual type (e.g. early vs. late) and bilingual ability level involved in the L3 process.
