After a discussion of some recent insights gained in generative grammar (mainly concerning presupposition), which are relevant for linguistic pragmatics, L. tracks the notion of 'intentionality' in some sociological theories of human interaction and in Austin's speech act theory. Finally, L. attempts to define 'intentionality' in such a way as to make it useful for linguistic pragmatics.
