Teaching material should be organized not on the relatively simple speech act level but should take the move structure as a guiding principle. Communicative competence is equivalent to the recognition of the 'tone' of a conversation and the ability to recognize and express formality, naturalness, casualness, etc. The effect of what is said depends on what might have been said as an alternative.
