Spencer-Oatey’s (2005) rapport-management model is deployed to examine open role-play interactions in Lima, enlarging research on Peruvian Spanish speakers’ preferred communicative patterns for gratitude expression in a situation displaying high social distance and no collocutor power difference. Contextually dictated and or permitted behavior was exhibited, even when this involved disrespect to and interlocutor autonomy violations.
