This study compares how English and Chinese speakers encode their criticisms (viz. face attacks) in evaluative media discourse drawn from US-based and Taiwan-based fashion talent competitions, in order to investigate the link between speakers’ pragmalinguistic strategies and their sociocultural orientations.
