Annotation

This paper emphasizes the discursive resources used in police interviews by rape victims themselves as they try to explain their own conduct in relation to the rape. The analyses elucidate that for interviewees’ “accounts” (Potter and Wetherell, 1987) to be heard as pertinent, a number of rampant and hard themes of victim-blaming must be accepted. Interviewees foresee and arrogate suggestions that diverse aspects of their own conduct added to their attack, and interviewers differ in the level of skill they exhibit at treating these shared comprehensions.
