Annotation

Catalan is undergoing a raise in prosodic patterns in which accent positioning is no longer linked to a discursive function. These novel patterns are discerned in a fictional production corpus. Besides the prosodic strategy of accent-shift in situ, two other formerly unconfirmed prosodic patterns are also perceived in the corpus: the ANT pattern (with accent on an item which is not rheme-final), and the DEL pattern (with accent on a thematic item; i.e., beyond the rheme). The frequency of use of these new patterns waxes over time, as conjectured. This might be at the expense of Catalan syntax, as accent position in Catalan sentences might be progressing towards its detachment from syntactic patterning.
