Annotation

This study presents (the profits of) a pragmatic conditionality category and defends it via theoretical arguments backed by examples from a database compiled from the International Corpus of English-GB. Next, it shows how conditional utterances that refer to diverse syntactic constructions can be rendered in Default Semantics. It is argued that given the variety of constructions via which conditional thoughts are voiced, conditionality is best considered as a pragmatic (and as such conceptual) category. Lastly, there are remarks on the status of this claim as a possible semantic/pragmatic universal.
