Annotation

This paper compares structures of agreements with assessments in Japanese and Anglo-American English. Word-order flexibility is a main resource in Japanese to construct strong agreements. English speakers too exhibit an inclination to operate on word order and to employ ellipsis for attaining alike targets, all within the affordances of English grammar. Grammatical constraints may be partly offset by the extensive use of formulaic expressions for yielding agreements—a strategy that does not depend on syntax.
