Annotation

This conversation analytic study of Russian question-answer sequences in telephone conversations focuses on affirming responses to polar (yes/no) questions, confirming or agreeing with the question’s propositional content. A simple affirmation can be accomplished via either a response token (da ‘yes’ or net ‘no’) or a repetition of the question's focal element (“echo repeat”). Three ways in which affirmative responses may resist the question is by transferring an incompatible evaluative stance, an incompatible epistemic stance, or by disattending its action implications.
