The use of the Hebrew disclaimer ˈani lo mevin/a (‘I don’t understand’) is very definite and formulaic and does not unavoidably allude to the process of epistemicity grasp. There is a link between the construction's formal attributes in terms of its prosody, morphophonology, and syntax, and the specific activities of interactants whilst utilizing it. It is proposed this construction pursued a grammaticization path from an epistemic verb phrase transferring literal comprehension dearth, to a fixed chunk conveying mixed-up, often disaffiliative, stance, and lastly to a solidified modal construction transferring criticism. A link was observed between the construction's structural features and the debilitation of its epistemic force: the further away from its literal meaning, the more diminished its morphophonological features and the more independent its syntactic and prosodic nature, thus disclosing the interweaven nature of interaction and grammar.
