Annotation

During their interactions, North Korean undergraduates enrolled in South Korean universities totally concurred with their South Korean peers, concealed their North Korean accents, and evaded North Korean-linked topics. These interaction patterns were straightly linked to their “peripheral” positioning in South Korean society. They focused on spoken English skills and considered themselves as “inadequate in that language, and thus, inferior”. This study elucidates underlying South Korean language ideologies and how such macro-plane structures are interweaven with language practices and identity negotiation amid disempowered transmigrants.
