Annotation

Members of the Guatemalan B'alam Ajpu band blend Spanish and Mayan languages in their music and run a school that merges hip hop lessons (rapping, break-dancing, etc.) with attempts to foster Mayan language use amid children. The language ideologies linked with B'alam Ajpu cross and defy those linked with both language revival and hip hop. The linguistic practices of B'alam Ajpu also contest ruling suppositions concerning ethnic identity in Guatemala.
