This study explores how police officers handle preparatory and argumentation stages of police-suspect interrogations in US custodial settings. ‘Preparatory' stages fix the key topics of confrontation and self-interest, and turn-taking and topic management strategies are oft deployed by police officers to coerce suspects into cooperation.
