Annotation

The ceremonial Damin register of Lardil, traditionally used by second-order male initiates, is a singular linguistic system, only counting 150 diverse morphemes and using ejectives and click—sound types unconfirmed in other Australian languages. These mystic qualities have prompted scholars to consider it as an artificial language. This study argues that the curious features grew accidentally, as conventionalized paralinguistic phonations got semanticized when connected with a signed language, Marlda Kangka, used by first-order male initiates, or luruku.
