Annotation

Yiddish phone interactions, broadcast to ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities via off-hook services termed “hotlines”, act as community membering tool, via language decrees, reflecting language ideologies and preserving community borders. Interviewees indicate their membership by linguistically attuning interviewers, and hosts sometimes alter language to exclude an interviewee. Modern Hebrew poses a problem for this community.
