Annotation

Using Systemic Functional Linguistics and the Appraisal System, this cross-linguistic corpus study explores Pacific War evaluations in US and Japanese history textbooks. While the first produce an authoritative voice ruling out alternative positions, the second's marked authorial voice is reinforced by alternative positions. Distinct evaluation orientations are used for image construal.
