Annotation

Drawing on governmentality and discourse studies and ethnographic approaches, this study debates how the workawayer figure in a Sámi heritage tourist resort in Finnish Lapland, is gently molded to comply with the exigencies of the current neoliberal work space. If Workaway presents novel languages and cultures with a taste of romanticised multiculturalism, tourist resort encounters are ruled by plain market rationality. Here, languages are assessed as abilities among yet not above others, as finally “you don’t unavoidably require any language for money deals”.
