Drawing on van Lier’s (2004) ecological approach to language acquisition and Scollon and Scollon’s (2004) nexus analysis, this paper explores a sub-Saharan immigrant's chances for second language learning in a outsourced Finnish cleaning job, isolated from the surrounding work community and communicating with clients solely via intermediaries. Given the restricted occasions for generating second language skills, cleaning work may constitute a dead-end job.
