Annotation

This paper shows that toponymy in (post)colonial settings is a propitious domain for linguistically-animated research. Evidence from ex-colonies of France (especially Senegal) and Spain (especially the Western Sahara) demonstrates that processes of (re)naming places are defined by a complex network of mainly social forces, and that colonial toponyms do not unavoidably vanish from the maps when decolonization supervenes.
