Annotation

A statistic approach, utilizing huge, unused numbers of linguistic, demographic, and sociological data, is used to shape language shift in communities like Indonesia, with millions of speakers. Factors like ethnicity, gender, religion, urbanization, economic development, are found to match the shift from local (Javanese, Sundanese, etc.) languages to the national Bahasa Indonesia language. These findings inspire research in progress on the sociological bases of language shift throughout small and sizable communities.
