Annotation

Using Clyne’s (2003) expositive facilitation framework, this study offers proof of monosyllabic saliency in Hong Kong Cantonese. In a corpus of texts emerging in mid-1990s unofficial discourse in Hong Kong Chinese newspaper columns (Li et al. 2014), a great amount of monosyllabic English words appeared as unintegrated insertions (Muysken 2000). Drawing on Luke and Lau’s (2008) empirically backed view that Cantonese verbs and adjectives are more typically monosyllabic than nouns, extra evidence is given to endorse the Monosyllabic Salience Hypothesis (MSH).
