Annotation

Recently, with the advent of social media discourses critical of some government policies, and the growing dispute on Singaporean identity in a transnational age, Singlish has been progressively deployed to compose a more stringent message of sociopolitical discontent. This role is intensified by Singlish's position as a creole of ‘the body', an emotional discourse of visceral responses that thus establishes an ingrained and traditional local community and identity.
