Using data from a sociolinguistic ethnography of three multilingual, transnational families from China in Britain, this study debates the experiences of distinct generations and individuals in handling bi- and multilingualism, and how these influence their perception of social relations and structures and establish and propose their own identities. It is argued that individual experiences and strategies to deal with multilingualism defiances need to be more observed, rather than general language preservation and shift patterns.
