The Singaporean view of English as bearing instrumental values and mother tongues (MTs) as holding up cultural functions discloses value-laden language choices, power-bent language ideologies and (potentially contradictory) daily multilingual family practices, expressly settled via family language policy, in three multilingual families, representing three main Singaporean ethnic groups, i.e. Chinese, Malay and Indian.
