Annotation

This paper examines how marketization affected two original teacher preparation programmes and centers on the Cambridge English Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) as a specific sort of market driven model. It is argued that classes of this type both list and strenghten a model of English as purely helpful and removed from its social context and a professional activity model which is very instrumental and symbolic of the type of deskilling and disreputing which have in recent decades emerged in many professional sectors.
